Dear Jenipher's Coffi Community,
Annwyl Gymuned Jenipher's Coffi,
It is with a heavy heart that we write to share the news that another devastating landslide tore through Mt Elgon last week. After unrelenting rain, the homes, land and crops of many Jenipher's Coffi farmers were swallowed up in a matter of moments. There is not yet an official count of those who lost their lives, but Jenipher has shared with us that she has sadly lost family members, including young relatives.
The landslide is yet another example of how those who contribute least to climate change suffer its impacts the most. It is a stark representation of the injustice and inequality in the world. It is again a reminder that simple choices in our daily lives can have major consequences, often for people already living in the most vulnerable situations - as you see below. The world of coffee extends far beyond our cups, and here at Jenipher’s Coffi, we are much more than the coffee that we offer. We are a community bound by shared passions, and shared values. We are driven by our mission to bring coffee drinkers and coffee producers closer to one another. The wellbeing of our coffee farmers has always been, and will always be, at the heart of what we do. They are the reason we can enjoy the deep, full-bodied flavors and complex aromas of Mt Elgon coffee every day. They dedicate their lives to cultivating beans that have an unique character and depth, shaped by the mountain's vibrant ecosystem.
Therefore, as we continue to serve you your favourite cup of coffee, we recognise the pain and struggle of our coffee farming friends. We're in the process of working out with Jenipher and Nimrod how best we can support them. In the meantime, we have set up a fund, to which we are contributing, and to which we invite you, our dear coffee community, to donate (see link below). This fund will aid in the immediate relief efforts, and in the longer-term rehabilitation and rebuilding of the lives and livelihoods of those most affected. We'll keep you posted about the situation and our assistance efforts, as more information becomes available.
Whether you donate, share the news, or continue to support by buying coffee that allows us to pay farmers a fair, and sustainable income, there are many ways to show solidarity. Community is often strongest in the face of adversity, and in this dark hour, we thank you for your unwavering support for our work and our farmers.
Thank you, diolch,
